Statement
We live in a fast paced world, and our technological dependency allows us to be connected at almost all times. The more I reflect on this, the more I come to realize the convenience of letting deep human connections falter. I feel that in our individualized worlds, it can be easy to forget the vast and nourishing benefits of building bonds with others.
In my practice, I reference candid images I’ve taken of water in motion and of friends and family in communication. My paintings feature transparent layers of acrylic and oil paint in a Fauvist style to create harmonious and intense scenes to enhance the essence of interconnectedness. Many of my pieces are large in scale and often are created from an inclusive perspective, as if the viewer is also experiencing the moment.
I find that flowing water and the way it responds to Earth’s changes is a beautiful way to imagine connectivity with those close to us. Water is grounded, unafraid to dive deep, open to changing courses without any resistance or control. It connects us all, silently and gracefully, bringing life and connection to all without seeking recognition. It is something to always watch, listen to, and learn from to navigate the complexities of connection.
These moments that I paint, print, and remove from the pottery wheel are the interconnection between my bonds with people, the earth, and myself. While working on these pieces, I was often reminded of the ripple effect that creating from a place of gratitude has. I hope these ripples reach you.
