Teaching Summer Camp art lessons at the Goggleworks Center for the Arts was the first opportunity I received to come up with lesson plans and teach classes entirely on my own. It was a priceless experience and I can’t wait to teach summer camps there again and again.

I primarily taught age groups of students 10-14 years old, and sometimes 6-10 year old groups. I had about 10 students per class with an hour and 30 minutes to teach them a single day project. At the beginning of the summer, I started with more step-by-step instruction, like the Aboriginal Cave Paintings and Op-Art Hand drawings pictured below.

As the classes went on, I started to pick up on what the students were responding to and what they were excited to work on for the entire hour and a half they were with me. This led me to teaching them choice-based oil pastel and watercolor architecture drawings, mural collaboration and design inspired by Keith Haring, and crocheting and designing and installing a collaborative installation piece (all pictured below).

It was so special to have had the opportunity to connect so deeply with kids that I sometimes only saw for an hour and a half. Middle schoolers are excellent teachers– they do not hide their opinions and helped me become a more playful and confident teacher. By the end of this summer, I was teaching and working with them, and collaborating alongside them. When instructing I gave all of the knowledge, tools and resources, and by the end of the day, we were all artists working together on the same plane. I’m very grateful to work at such an incredible place that provides so much for the community.
